Barry-Eaton District Health Department is seeking a part-time Registered Dietician to work the WIC program. Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition or Dietetics with at least one year of professional experience and registration as a Dietitian by the American Dietetics Association is required. Under general supervision, develops and implements the nutrition assessment and education component of clinical programs or develops and implements nutrition programming for other Health Department programs. Acts as case manager for clients who are nutritionally high risk for MSS/ISS and /or WIC programs. Completes needs assessments for clients and develops nutrition care plans. May serve as leader for a designated program area such as WIC.
Essential Functions
- Conducts nutritional assessments and provides nutritional education services to participants of the WIC and/or Maternal Support Services and Infant Support Services (MSS/ISS) programs and other clients of the District. Screens prospective clients for program eligibility. Evaluates client data, assesses nutritional status, and implements nutritional therapy and counseling.
- Educates and counsels high-risk clients on the application of principle of nutrition taking into consideration medical and nutritional needs, cultural and personal preferences, finances and client’s goals. Prepares nutrition care plans for those receiving counseling. Monitors and follows-up on all medically high-risk clients.
- Conducts home visits to assess the growth and development of infants. Provides developmental screening tool to aid the parent in ensuring the child is reaching developmental milestones.
- Makes referrals to community agencies. Communicates with physicians, public health nurses and other public health organizations regarding referrals and client follow-up.
- Discusses clients’ nutritional care and instruction with other staff involved in client care. Coordinates the integration of nutritional services into other program areas. Serves as nutrition resource person for all staff members compiling information including pamphlets, booklets, articles and other resources for use in nutrition programs.
- As leader for a designated program area, assists in the planning, organizing, administering, and evaluating of services to ensure conformance with the goals and objectives of the District as well as compliance with regulatory requirements. Updates other staff on program changes.
- As lactation educator, provides breastfeeding education to individuals and groups in prenatal classes. Provides support and assists with breastfeeding issues after the child is born.
- Consults with local and state health officials on matters of mutual interest. Reviews and implements necessary changes for designated program areas. Represents the District on issues related to nutrition.
- Serves as nutritional consultant to the food service programs of jails in the District, assisting in menu planning and giving recommendations to menus in order to meet State requirements.

- Maintains client and employee confidentiality as required by policy and law.
- In time of public emergency, may be required to report for assigned duties inside or outside of the BEDHD.

Employment Qualifications
Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition or Dietetics.
Experience: One year of professional experience as a Dietitian. Experience in infant and maternal health preferred.
Other Requirements:
- Registration as a Dietitian by the American Dietetics Association.
- Valid Michigan driver’s license and a vehicle for business use or other ability to travel to client homes and/or other worksites throughout the District.
- Ability to enter and retrieve data, create basic documents or charts. Ability to problem solve basic hardware and software problems. Ability to perform basic computer functions such as logging on and off, changing passwords, opening a program and related operations. Knowledge of all Microsoft Office products and what they are used for. Ability to easily adapt to new programs.
