Playground Safety
Environmental Health / Playground Safety

According to a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (1999), about 156,000 victims were treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms for injuries associated with public playground equipment. Many of these injuries were a result from falls, entrapment, protrusions, crush points and sharp edges.

To help address the public safety concerns with older and inferior built playground equipment, the Barry-Eaton District Health Department provides inspection and consultation services to anyone who owns and maintains playground equipment for the public’s use.

The Playground Equipment Safety Act of 1997 regulates the manufacture and assembly of public playground equipment in the State of Michigan, and adopts the safety standards put forth by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International.

If you are concerned about your playground equipment and would like to have it evaluated for CPSC and ASTM safety standards as to proper assembly, materials, repair and maintenance, then please contact our Certified Playground Safety Inspector, Dur Efaw at (517) 541-2629.
