Food Service Program

Purpose and Mission Statement

The Environmental Health Division of the Barry-Eaton District Health Department, under the authority of Public Act 92 .

 (Michigan Food Law of 2000), regulates all known food service establishments and public food service events subject to licensure within the jurisdiction of Barry and Eaton Counties.   

The mission of the Environmental Health Division as it relates to food safety is to promote and maintain food-safe measures and sanitary conditions at all licensed food service establishments and events, which lowers the risk potential and occurrence for foodborne disease. 

Program Objectives and Goals

Promote and maintain operational standards of food safety and sanitation in accordance with the federal food safety initiatives (1999 FDA Food Code).

Maintain inspection frequency of all licensed food service establishments.

Promote food safety and food service sanitation through outreach activities and resources, as well as provide educational training opportunities for food service management, staff, and the general public.

Impose regulatory enforcement action against food service establishments not in compliance with the Michigan Food Law and adopted Food Code.

Conduct food service plan reviews of all food service establishments being proposed, remodeled, or undergoing major changes in food operations. 

Conduct investigations in response to food-related complaints and incidents of suspected/confirmed foodborne disease.

Conduct disease surveillance for possible foodborne outbreaks.
