There are approximately 3 million children residing in the state of Michigan. Over one million of these children will need eye care by the time they reach high school graduation age. Some 10,000 of these children are entering school each year with inadequate vision.

Vision and hearing screening is available through the Health Department Free of Charge for infants – school age children.

As with immunizations, Hearing and Vision screening is required before entering kindergarten. The Barry-Eaton District Health Department provides vision and hearing screening for all children of this age at School Organized Kindergarten roundups as well as at monthly Clinics at the Health Department.

School age children are screened every other year for hearing and vision at their school. The hearing screening program screens grades Developmental Kindergarten, Young Fives, Kindergarten, 2^nd, 4^th and 6^th. The vision screening program screens grades 1^st, 3^rd, 5^th, 7^th, and 9^th in conjunction with drivers education. Students in Preschool and Headstart are screened at their school if requested by the organization to the health department. Students who do not pass the screening process are notified and recommendations are made to follow up with either an eye professional-for vision, or a family Doctor or Specialist.
